A new tourist route developed by the Tourism Department of the Chernivtsi City Council was presented in Chernivtsi

The new tourist route includes 9 locations. At each of them, tourists get acquainted with the architectural masterpieces of Josef Leitzner, who designed a dozen buildings in old Chernivtsi. These include educational institutions, medical facilities, former banks and museums, and one of the city's tourist highlights, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The starting point of the route is the former Higher Industrial School (now the secondary school No. 4), and the end point is the University Institute (now the Law Faculty of the Yurii Fedkovych National University).

"When creating this route, our experts primarily aimed to demonstrate a different view of architectural Chernivtsi - to show those locations that are not included in standard sightseeing tours.  At the same time, we wanted to discover and remind someone about such a famous personality as Josef Leitzner. After all, his significant contribution to the development of the architectural face of our city is underestimated," says Serhii Bostan, Director of the Department of Socio-Economic Development and Strategic Planning of the City Council.

During the presentation, the participants tried out the new tourist route. In addition to learning about Josef Leitzner and his contribution to the architectural heritage of Chernivtsi, each tourist received a map of the route, a postcard of the Neo-Gothic church as a souvenir, and patriotic fortune cookies to cheer them up. The most active and inquisitive participants were awarded with presents.

You can get a map of the route at our tourist information center located on 1 Central Square.

For reference: After moving to Chernivtsi, architect and engineer Josef Leitzner was the director of the Higher State Industrial School for 17 years, which trained a galaxy of architects and builders. Leitzner also initiated the creation and was the first director of the Bukovyna Industrial Museum (on the basis of which the regional museum of local lore was later established). He devoted 43 years of his life to his favorite work and was instrumental in promoting industrial and commercial education not only in Bukovyna but throughout the Austrian state. Leitzner lived in Chernivtsi until his last breath.  August 22 is the 127th anniversary of his death.
