Once the Jewish community in Chernivtsi made up more than half of the total population, and in the Habsburg Empire Chernivtsi even received the unofficial name "Judenstadt" ("Jewish city"). Here they never knew the concept of "settlement boundaries", and Jews took an active part in the management of the city, and in its development. Therefore, the Jewish theme in our city is not accidental at all. On the contrary, without its study it is impossible to fully understand the history and culture of Chernivtsi.
The tour acquaints the guests of the city with the architectural and historical heritage of the large Jewish community that existed in Chernivtsi during the XIX - XX centuries. The route will be interesting for everyone who wants to learn more about the history of Chernivtsi and European Jewry, who cares about the Holocaust, who wants to look at city life from a new perspective and see unexpected symbols in urban architecture.
The tour includes the former Jewish House on Theater Square, a shtetl building, a large old synagogue and a hospital. We will see houses of worship, family and home synagogues, houses of Jewish societies and the Toynbihalle educational center on the Turkish street. We will visit the memorial in honor of the Jews, prisoners of the Chernivtsi ghetto in 1941 in the square of the Turkish well. Let's visit the modern Jewish school №41 and the Hesed Shushan Charitable Foundation. And also visit the Jewish cemetery on Zelena street. In addition, guests will be able to visit the existing synagogue on L. Kobylytsia street, where there is a kosher dining room and a ritual mikvah.
