The architectural heritage of Chernivtsi is not only the city center but also an entire district of private homes that once belonged to wealthy residents from the Austrian and Romanian periods, which emerged in the early twentieth century. Over a hundred years ago, it was a true paradise and was known as the «Villa Quarter».

The villa quarter is located near the modern Taras Shevchenko Park and is defined by the streets of Yurii Fedkovych, Oleksandr Shcherbaniuk, Heroiv Maidanu, and Sadova as they exist today. This area saw the construction of luxurious villas in the style of Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau, Swiss-style chalets, and fashionable cottages. Architects aimed to embody the concept of a «garden city», introduced by English urban planners at the end of the 19th century. Builders designed unique projects, taking into consideration the surrounding landscape and national architectural traditions. Special attention was given to landscaping, the arrangement of squares, decorative details, and refined compositions.

One of the most luxurious Art Nouveau villas resembles a castle-palace. Its walls are adorned with burgundy facing bricks (known as «vyshnivka» at the time), steeply pitched tiled roofs, a cartouche featuring a coat of arms, and a bas-relief depicting a large bird. The Gothic elements of the building are evident in the presence of small towers.
