Chernivtsi City Hall
The central square is the heart of Chernivtsi, from which the main streets-arteries of the city diverge. The City Hall is the most magnificent building of the ensemble of the square. The three-story building with a two-story tower, which reaches a height of 50 meters, was built in 1843-1847 by German architect Adolf Marin.
In the architecture of the building there are features associated with the departure from the principles of classicism and the transition to the Italian Renaissance: the facade is designed in the classical style, while the tower shows Renaissance motifs. A striking feature of the town hall is two clocks. One of them is a tower installed during the construction process. And the second one, located above the main entrance, was donated by Mayor Anton Kokhanovskyi, who headed Chernivtsi from 1866 to 1892. This clock with a dial that glows at night, he ordered in Prague and presented to his favorite city. The building has a beautiful courtyard, which houses a mysterious well. According to legend, it has a tunnel leading to Mount Tsetsyno.
Nowadays, the building continues to be used for its intended purpose. Today it houses the residence of the mayor and Chernivtsi City Council. Now a yellow and blue Ukrainian flag is flying on the spire of the tower, and the facade is decorated with the emblem of the city. In addition, the motto of the city is written in large letters on the roof of the building: "By joint efforts - Viribus Unitis".
Since November 12, 2004, a trumpet player in colorful Bukovynian clothes has been climbing the tower of the building at 12 o'clock every day. The trumpet player plays the melody of the immortal song "Marichka" on all four sides of the world. Due to the wonderful city tradition, the melody has already been called the unofficial anthem of Chernivtsi.
The imposing building of the Town Hall very harmoniously fit into the architectural ensemble of the main square of the city, making the central part of Chernivtsi the most beautiful place.
