The cozy square of the Philharmonic is one of the oldest squares in Chernivtsi
The history of the square dates back to the end of the XVIII century, when the market was located here, where mostly flour was traded. Hence the first name - Flour, in German Mehlplatz. Later, the square was renamed more than once - Rudolfsplatz (in honor of the son and only heir of Emperor Franz Joseph I Rudolf), since 1918 - was called Dacia, since 1944 - Victory, although the ancients in their own way called this place Mehlplatz.
The main building of the architectural ensemble, which determined the modern name of the square, is the former building of the music society - today the regional philharmonic. Its walls and halls, painted by professor of historical painting Carl Jobst, remember the most prominent musical stars of the XIX century: Solomiia Krushelnytska, Enrique Caruso, Arthur Rubinstein ... More than a hundred years would pass and this room dedicated to the Chernivtsi Philharmonic would borrow its name, name of the square on which it stands.
The square is decorated with a luxurious four-storey building with a corner tower-bay window - the former Bristol Hotel, which was built during 1905-1906. Bristol was considered one of the best hotels in Chernivtsi. The house had 57 rooms and three elevators. The richest guests of the city settled here. In 1940, the hotel was nationalized and valued at four million lei. Since then, the magnificent inscription "Hotel Bristol" has been preserved at the top of the façade and the roof is covered with red tiles.
A decorative cast iron column is situated near the hotel, which functioned during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Nearby there is a monument to the famous Hungarian pianist and composer Ferenc Liszt. Here Chernivtsi residents and guests of the city make wishes by rubbing the nose of a famous musician. If you press the button behind the monument, you can hear the music of F. Liszt.
In the spring, the Philharmonic Square turns into a flirtatious girl dressed in a pale pink sakura color. Chernivtsi residents and guests of the city love its beauty with enchanted views.
