German People's House
On the most fashionable street of Chernivtsi - the former Panska Street -the building of the German People's House attracts the attention of passers-by from afar with its unique and interesting facade. This is one of the few buildings on Panska Street that has not been touched by the hands of rebuilders and due to which it has preserved its original appearance to this day. And for more than a century Chernivtsi residents and guests have been admiring the massive four-storey building with bay windows, trapezoidal balconies and pointed arches. The facade of the house is designed in German style. If you do not take into account the artistic plastic ornaments and cornices, it is enlivened only by the mass of balconies and loggias, while the whole building is topped by a steep tiled roof and gable. Its central part contains elements of the old German half-timbered style with a wooden frame.
"The proud house will remain for many decades a symbol of German unity, German culture," the newspapers of the time wrote of the monumental building, built in the first decade of the twentieth century.
The building provided rooms for a large hall, cafes, guest rooms, a winter bowling alley, a wine cellar. But the most significant decoration of the German house was, without a doubt, its spacious, beautifully decorated hall, with beautiful acoustics, which was achieved through the correct proportions and curved rivets of the ceiling.
The carriage ride leads to the yard of a German house, which once had a luxurious garden and a spacious playground. There the woman danced with her gentlemen to the romantic melodies of a brass band. And today, as more than a hundred years ago, German-speaking guests from all over the world know the building of the German People's House. Anyone who views the elegant building also has the opportunity to create their own tune on a laser harp located near the German House.
