Art object "Light of Panska Street"
Walking through Chernivtsi you can see a lot of wrought iron products donated to the city by local blacksmiths. One of them is a lantern installed at the beginning of Olha Kobylianska Street. It is a symbol of the restoration of the historical tradition of lighting the city.
More than 150 years ago, when there was no electric lighting, lanterns appeared that were lit every night by a city lantern. There were various lamps on the streets of the city. Some stood trampled on poles, just in front of the house, others had wall lanterns, some were placed in artificial recesses in the wall above the door. Some shone until 10 pm, others all night. The lantern man with his ladder went around and lit the lanterns, and at the appointed time he came and extinguished again. This is the historical tradition of lighting the city restored in Chernivtsi. Lanterns come out of the Town Hall with a ladder in their hands and light a fire in the lantern, thus signaling that it is time to turn on the lights all over the street. This tradition, started on the City Day, has become a traditional Saturday event.
