Sadhora is a small town on the left bank of the River Prut, which has been a part of Chernivtsi since 1965. It was founded during the Russian -Turkish War (in 1771). During this period, Baron Mykola Gartenberg built a mint on the outskirts of Chernivtsi. Since Gartenberg literally meant "Garden Mountain", the craft settlement became known as Sadhora.
After the war, the need for a mint disappeared and it ceased to exist. But the settlement in Sadhora has already settled down and started to develop. Jews predominated among the population, and there were also significant Polish and Ukrainian communities. At the beginning of the 19th century, a new owner appeared in Sadhora, it was Baron Mustyats. He bought these lands and got the Austrian government to hold annual fairs here. In 1801, with the charter of Emperor Franz II, Sadhora officially received the status of a "trading town" and the coat of arms: on a silver background, a green mountain, over which are three red roses. Sadhora was given the status of a trading town and was obliged to hold 4 large fairs and 8 small ones annually. This gave a huge impetus to the development of Sadhora, it appeared on the maps of the world and Europe. Some of the largest fairs in Europe at that time were organized here.
The first Jews appeared here when huge fairs were organized. But the mass settlement of these lands by Jews began when Tzaddik Israel Friedmann settled here in 1842. He is the founder of the famous Sadhora Hasidic dynasty, which has not been interrupted to this day. It was because of the residence of Tzaddik Friedmann, which was attended by dignitaries from all over the world, that Sadhora was called the "Little Jewish Vatican." Today, Jews from all over the world come to his grave in the Sadhora cemetery. Tzaddik Israel Friedmann initiated a new direction of religion, which preached wealth, luxury, joy. And many researchers of Jewish culture claim that the melody of the world-famous song "Hava Nagila" originated in Sadhora. Its name in Hebrew literally means "rejoice."
