Chernivtsi has experienced many different rulers over its centuries-long history. But the city reached its "golden age" during the 134-year rule of the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg Empire. Located on the far eastern borders of their possessions, the city was designed to become a kind of "showcase" of all the greatness and power of one of the strongest states of the nineteenth century. Of the 755 historical and architectural monuments of Chernivtsi, about 90% belong to the Austrian period, so talk about the Habsburgs in Chernivtsi is simply inevitable. We will try to understand the history of development, prosperity and fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, find out what it endowed Chernivtsi and what it deprived, understand the origins and manifestations of the famous Chernivtsi tolerance, see dozens of wonderful works of the best European architects.
