What should every tourist do in Chernivtsi? See the university, walk around Panska Street, sit in an atmospheric coffee shop, and, of course, come to the city's Tsentralna Square at 12:00 to hear and see the Chernivtsi trumpeter.
The glorious city tradition of "Marichka" being heard every day at noon from the tower of the Chernivtsi City Hall to the four corners of the world is known not only in Ukraine but also abroad. This ritual has become one of the tourist highlights of Chernivtsi.
Since 2004, the year this tradition was born, tourists and Chernivtsi residents have been gathering at 12:00 p.m. near the City Hall to become a part of the beautiful attraction, to see the trumpeter in folk costume, and to hear the now unofficial anthem of Chernivtsi, a melody by Bukovyna composer Stepan Sabadash. In the fall of this year, the attraction was supplemented: on holidays (national and city), in addition to "Marichka," the legendary "Chervona Ruta" by Volodymyr Ivasyuk is also played from the City Hall tower.
"I play the melody of 'Chervona Ruta' towards Tsentralna Square, and 'Marichka' is played from the tower to the other three sides. This is the order of performance only on holidays. On other days, everything remains unchanged," says Mykola Blyshchuk, the trumpeter of the Chernivtsi City Hall.
Mykola Blyshchuk climbs 126 steps every day to get to the City Hall tower. The trumpeter stands where the magistrate's staff used to inform citizens about world events in three languages and begins the ceremony.
"I love my job so much. Every day I have to be healthy, in shape, and work out before going out to play for Chernivtsi residents and tourists. People from Europe also come to us and come to the City Hall at 12 o'clock to listen. People have come to love this tradition. Often, after I play, people wait downstairs, asking to take a picture and tell us about our tradition," says Mykola Blyshchuk.
Playing "Marichka" and telling Chernivtsi residents and visitors that it's noon is a daily mission for the trumpeter, regardless of the season or weather. So, whenever travelers visit Chernivtsi, whether in hot summer or cold winter, they will always be able to hear how beautifully the heart of Chernivtsi sounds at 12:00.
